Let this be preliminary exposure to the case. It is, after all, what was made public at the time of the arrest and subsequent legal proceedings. The video was published by Global News on August 15, 2013 and it shows then U.S. Attorney for New York, Loretta Lynch referring to the case as The Biggest of Its Kind in History
A related article by the National Post delivers heavy accusations about the characters of the people involved in the case. It is easy to see how people tangled in events like this can look like monsters, at least superficially. However, as you read the article, and assimilate the limited information provided in it, you should entertain several questions. One of those questions led me to see the potential for this story to change people’s perspectives about the world and themselves. It also had me thinking about the true motivations of the international legal systems.
“Where others saw citizens of the world, the defendants saw a pool of potential marks,” said Loretta Lynch, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, when announcing the arrests.
This question, as simple and evident as it was to me may not have occurred to you, but let it sit in your mind for a while until it detonates only to expose more questions relevant to the issues I have discussed here.
As I said the question is simple: Why, when they were facing decades of imprisonment for the “crimes committed”, were the U.S. and Canadian courts happy to release them in less than four years and a sentence of time served?
Ponder this properly and let me know what you think in the comments.
PS: No other information on the case has been made public as of yet; the truth remains with those of us who are related to the story.
